Changi Airport MRT

c504.jpgSingapore's expansion of its world-class mass rapid transit (MRT) system has relied on O-cellTM technology for numerous deep foundation testing needs over the last 2 years. An O-cellTM test at the new Changi Airport MRT station was another example of the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) confidence in the method.

Faced with the task of verifying the pull-out capacity of excavated barrettes, general contractor Kumagai-Sembawang JV and foundation contractor, Foundation Asiana Regional, decided to perform a tension test on a one meter diameter drilled shaft to check project design. Instead of using a conventional reaction system, they chose to simply drill the test shaft deeper and use an O-cellTM to push the pile section out of the ground. LOADTEST utilized a 540-mm O-cellTM, placed roughly 28 m above the pile toe. The upper 12.3 m section was tested to its ultimate capacity at an applied load of 8.1 MN.
