Loadtest, Inc. sets World Record 278 MN (31,350 Ton)Static Load Test

Gainesville, FL – Loadtest, Inc. announces a new world record static load test achieving 31,350 tons (278 MN) on a single 118-inch (3m) diameter foundation pile at the Incheon 2nd Link project in Korea. The test was conducted off-shore utilizing the Osterberg Cell test method and exceeds the previous world record by 13,000 tons (116 MN) set by Loadtest, Inc. in 2003. Mr. Jack Hayes, P. Eng, D.I.C, President of Loadtest, Inc. remarked, “This new world record is a phenomenal achievement and is a tribute to AMEC and Samsung Construction’s foresight that a test of this magnitude would even be attempted.”

The general contractor for this 10km (6.2 mile) structure spanning an East China Sea Inlet is AMEC and Samsung Construction is fabricating the foundation elements. This causeway and bridge structure will link the new Incheon International Airport with the proposed New Songdo City project.

Structural design firms are recognizing the reliability and value of Loadtest, Inc.’s patented Osterberg Cell method for testing to previously unimaginable ultimate loads. Applying these large loads helps reduce the factor of uncertainty faced by engineers when designing such significant foundations. By utilizing full scale elements for testing, there is no need to scale down test shafts or piles. Being able to determine ultimate capacities of these foundation elements also allows engineers to use more sophisticated design and analytical techniques.
